Vestey Foods Food from Britain (FFB) Buyers’ Guide

Traditional British Family Farming
Pure and Natural

Vestey have specialised for many years in the supply of high quality vacuum packed beef to the UK market. We can also supply Frozen Boneless Beef for further processing.

The company has a history of innovation in product development and quality improvement, by working in close partnership with prime British producers, such as Woolley Brothers.

Woolley Brothers (Wholesale Meats) Ltd
The company was set up in 1979 by Brian and Raymond Woolley. A new abattoir was completed in 1983 and consisted of a three specie plant (Cattle, Pigs and Sheep) with a small cutting room attached.

After a few years the two Brothers reviewed the business, which included a farming operation, and decided that Raymond would concentrate on the farms and Brian the abattoir. The two sons of Brian, Paul and Steven, had joined the Company and at about this time Brian decided to withdraw from the day-to-day running and let his two sons take over.

The Company also built an Incinerator on the site to enable it to dispose, in-situ, of cattle remains (a logical concept with the disposal costs of abattoir waste steadily climbing).
With the view that with the eradication of BSE in the UK at some stage, the brothers decided that they would have to increase their penetration into the clean market. Thus in 2004 work commenced in building a £1 million pound extension to the site housing a full throughput boning plant.

This was completed in late January 2005, and after gaining its Full-Throughput Licence commenced operations in the first week of February. The first HAS score was 96 out of a potential 100 which indicates the standard of operation of the facility from the start.
As further confirmation of the standards achieved the plant obtained its EFSIS Accreditation Grade C in January 2006.

The Cutting plant has an initial capacity to de-bone over 200 quarters per day and has both chilling and blast-freezing capabilities. We are already working to over 65% capacity at the moment and are growing continuously.

With the ending of the OTMS scheme in January 2006 the Abattoir is now approved to kill both UTM and OTM clean cattle.

Woolley Brothers is still a Family owned business, with the two sons of the founder now fully in charge of the operation.
